Pastor Jobst Bittner of Tübingen, Germany is doing what few others dare to even imagine. This outspoken and courageous man of God has established a ministry of repentance, reconciliation, and restoration in Tuebingen- one of Germany’s most historically notorious cities. His message is bold, direct, and difficult- yet full of compassion, mercy, and hope- infusing the kind of change that only a supernatural move of God can accomplish.
His church is built upon the belief that the transforming power of Y’shua (Jesus) the Messiah can and will bring forgiveness and healing to the most wounded and broken of the masses. Over 60% of his “protestant charismatic free†German church members are offspring of Nazis. These “children†have devoted their lives to the cause of repentance for the evils committed by their parents and nation. The members of the congregation have consistently, tangibly, and lovingly reached out in service to the Jewish community and survivors of the Holocaust in ways that are as unique and innovative as they are radical and bold. They raise money, visit homes, and provide help and support through financial and human services. They march, preach, educate, assemble and peaceably demonstrate in town squares, host concerts and events, and effect change everywhere they go- in everything they do. (The extent of their commitment to their cause is reflected in the fact that their meeting tent is built upon the very train tracks that led countless thousands of Germany’s Jews to their brutal end in Dachau. To enter the main door of the tent, one must actually walk over the tracks.)
In 2007, Pastor Jobst led hundreds of Christians from several countries and every denomination- along with Messianic Jewish believers and Holocaust survivors- on the March of Life. Retracing the steps of the Jews as they were forced on the Death March, the group carried (on foot) the message of repentance, reconciliation, and rebirth to Germans throughout the march. The response was overwhelming. While on the march, a visit to Dachau brought a horrifying revelation to the unsuspecting pastor and his group. Posted on a wall in the camp was a map displaying the locations of the numerous concentration camps, routes of death marches, and killing institutions along those routes. In his own words, “almost every road and highway in the former Eastern part of Germany was covered in (Jewish) blood.†The shocking discovery inspired the planning of another march, but this time in former East Germany (scheduled for August 9-16, 2008)*. Nothing of this spiritual magnitude has occurred in this part of the country since the war.
Pastor Jobst’s devotion to the victims of the Holocaust is unprecedented in German history. He has also teamed up with many others over the years, including Joel Chernoff to re-form the popular Messianic duo, LAMB. Ted has led worship services in congregations and conferences around the world.
